Montreal Baseball Fantasy Camp

1998 Expos Campers earn respect of Red Sox and Twins!

Many thanks to all those who joined our Expos team this past February in Fort Myers, Florida. The Twins (1 Minnestota team) and Red Sox campers (4 Boston teams) didn't give us much of a chance, but under the expert tutelage of Manager, Bill Lee and coach, Mike Stenhouse - the Expos Campers ended up with a respectable 3-3 record. Plus we were the only team to defeat the Championship Twins' team and the runner up Red Sox team. And, the Expos team was the only team to beat the Pros in the closing 3-inning Fantasy Games vs the Stars: 1-0.

Special thanks to our Canadian campers including:

  • MITCH MELNICK: 5th Fantasy Camp. As expected, a fine job on the mound, but unexpectedly exploded at the plate, batting almost .500. All this while he prepared each day for his radio show back in Montreal.

  • DR. GERRY SOHMER: Our 1998 Team MVP! In just his 2nd Camp, "Doc" was unstoppable at the plate, going 17 for 26 - an amazing .654 average, along with errorless baseball in the OF and IF (must be those endodontist hands!)

  • JACK DUNN: At age 67 and at his 4th Camp, Jack is our team's inspirational leader. Line-drives all over the place and superb defense at 1st base (he is a hockey goalie).

  • DENIS COTE: From Pointe-au-Pere and in his 2nd Camp, Denis shaved his beard and moustache and had a great Camp both on the mound and as a switch-hitter at the plate. Our team nominee for the Camp's "Charlie Hustle" award.

  • MARK STEWART: An attorney from Toronto, "La Grande Orange II" battled a severe throat & chest cold all week, but anchored our infield at 3B. Feeling his worst, he ended camp with a 4-5 game, w/ 2 doubles & 2 RBI.

* Also joining our team was Neil Meany (PAS*SPORTS ass't camp director from Orlando); Jim Casey (from Washington, DC); and Fort Myers locals - Matt Galewski, Lou Holub, and Chuck Gebig.
