  • How do I change my FTP password?:

    To change your FTP password:

From any FTP Client command line type:

site pswd "oldpassword" "newpassword" (including the quotes).

For "oldpassword" you substitute the old password, and needless to say "newpassword" is your new password.

If you use an FTP client like WSFTP then login to your virtual server using your username and current password. Right click on the WSFTP window and go to FTP Commands then select SITE. A command line window should show up where you would type the following.

    site pswd "oldpassword" "newpassword"

  • What do ASCII & Binary Uploads mean?:

There are two types of transfers Binary and Ascii as shown in the menu option just underneath the windows for WS-FTP. Binary files transfers are required for graphic files, .exe programs etc. ASCII files are used generally for text file transfers such as .html files etc. Selecting Automatic will ensure that the files get transferred based on extensions you provide. For ex. You can tell the FTP program that all files with .html for ex. are to be transferred using ASCII. This way when you select multiple files – transfers are conducted correctly and FTP will switch between Binary and ASCII transfers as required.
Text files such as html files need to be uploaded in ASCII format and not binary. Perl scripts are also in this catagory.

Image files such as .gif and .jpg or .jpeg and executable files such as .exe need to be uploaded in binary format.

To tell FTP which files to transfer using ASCII always, click on Options (bottom menu bar) and then on Extensions. You will see a window as shown below. Add the extensions as required. Now you can use the Auto transfer feature of WS-FTP.

  • I am unable to connect to via FTP?:

Please check that your network/ISP allows communication on Port 21 (the standard FTP port), some companies block this port using a firewall etc. You may need to ask your Network Administrator about this.

Assuming that the problem is not a firewall and you have the configuration information entered correctly, please contact us with the following information:

    Host Name/IP:
    User:
    Password:

and we can check it up for you.
